Track kicked off another season on March. This year there are a total of fifteen participants with runners represented from each grade. The team is participating in the 100, 200 and 400 meter sprints. For distance, there is the 800, the 1600 (or one mile) and the 3200 (two mile) meter races. This is in addition to 110 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles. For field events, there is discus, shot put, high jump, long jump, triple jump and possibly javelin or pole vault. Relays are usually the 4×100 and 4×400 meter.

Coach Scribner has taken over the role of head coach this year. Team member and senior Jacob Sabino said, “He’s a 10k specialist and a pretty cool guy.” Sabino added, “I like him. He’s nice but pushes you to try really hard.”

Junior Moritz Gloesslein agreed, “He brings lots of personal experience with him and knows good workouts for the team.” Senior Monty Lussow added, “The coach is super chill.”

The team did moderately well last year, but Gloesslein has higher hopes for the current season: “The team has more potential in track events this year because there are a lot more people on the team than there were last year which gives us a better chance of doing well in a relay.” He added, “We also have a lot of people that are already really experienced and have potential themselves to do well.”

Emma Whittman pointed out that running against small schools should hopefully ensure a good season: “I think we have a lot of good runners this year that have the potential to make states.”

Sabino expressed, “If I had one wish for the team it’d be that we all try really hard to improve this season and have fun while doing so.” Gloesslein agreed, “I hope everyone shows up at practice consistently so that the team will become better and stronger and be even better next year.”

The Team had a meet on March 25 at Catalina Foothills High School. The girls lost to Salpointe 0-77, to Catalina Foothills 0-84 and to Walden Grove 0-15. the boys had similar results with losses coming from Salpointe 0-111, from Catalina Foothills 0-43 and from Walden Grove 0-23.

The Sectional Meet, which serves as a qualification for the State Tournament, will be held on April 28. The State Tournament comes soon after on May 8 and May 9 at Mesa Community College.
