While everyone has been complaining about Zero Hour classes, the Cross Country team has been coming in three times a week at 6 AM for morning practice. After competing in three meets so far, the team is eager to see what the rest of the season will hold.
Last season, the team had ten runners. Only six remain this year.
Senior and team captain Keely Breedlove said, “It’s just me and five boys.” Nevertheless, Breedlove has high hopes for the team. “I can’t qualify for states in a team, because of the size, but I can work for my individual goal, which is definitely to make it to states and sectionals,” she said. “Hopefully the boys will be able to qualify for both states and sectionals as a team.”
Sophomore Kai Morfin said, “I think we have a very good shot at making it to states this season.”
Returning coach Robert Scribner is well-liked among the team. Breedlove said, “Before he was coaching cross country, he was a competitive runner, so he knows what he’s doing.” Morfin said, “He’s such a good coach, because he’s always pushing us to be our best and to keep trying.”
This is Scribner’s second year as The Gregory School’s cross country coach, and he plays a big role leading the team. “Our team is smaller, and very young. There is very little margin for error, so every athlete needs to perform when it counts. I think they will rise to the occasion,” Scribner said.
“Kai Morfin spent his entire summer preparing for the season, and he has already won a meet for us individually. He has a really bright future in the sport. Keely is rounding into shape, and by November I think she will be running really well.”
So far this season the best meet has been against San Manuel, along with 10 other schools. The team as a whole placed second, and all the boys placed in the top half. Specifically, Morfin placed first out of 54 boys and Breedlove placed second out of 54 girls.
Coach Scribner is confident that the team will keep performing well throughout the season. “Luckily, it’s a talented group, and we will be really successful if we work hard and stay healthy.”
