The runners on the TGS cross country team are off to a great start this season. Both the women’s and the men’s team have already competed in two meets against Tucson High School, Catalina Magnet, Amphitheater High School, and Sabino High School. On the men’s side, every competitor ran the 5k in under 20 minutes, with the fastest being Nick Rosquist (17’), with a time of 17:40. Rosquist, Addison Mort (18’), Sebastian Quintana (18’) and Ben Manninen (18’) all finished among the top 10 runners. The men’s team finished second overall in the first meet, a great achievement for their first race.

One of the seasoned runners on the team, Manninen says: “Our runners are already running better times than they were capable of last year, and I expect that by the end of the season, we will place well at the state cross country meet.”

At the second meet, the men’s team won, scoring 36 points, with second place only scoring 40. All three schools the team raced against were in a higher division.

The women’s team also put in a great effort in both meets, with their top runner, Aritalia Williams (19’), finishing the first meet with a time of 24:15. The team is happy to have more women runners this year, and Williams, along with many other members of the team, ran over summer break in preparation for the season.

The coach, Robert Scribner, said about the women’s team, “I can see clear potential, and I think that we will have some very competitive performances by October.”

Scribner says the women “currently don’t have enough athletes for a full scoring team,” but at the very least, they will “send an individual athlete or two to the state meet.”
